About Our Department

Accountancy Department is one of the pioneer departments of the Polytechnic which was established in 1981. The Polytechnic used to be known then as Anambra State College of Arts, Science and Technology. The college was renamed as Anambra State Polytechnic, through Edict No. 12 of 1985 published as a supplement of Anambra State of Nigeria. Gazette No. 24, Volume 10 of 27thJune 1984. The quality of its education programmes and the availability of vital facilities necessitated the take-over of the Polytechnic by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1993. It is today known as the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. At the inception of the Polytechnic in 1981, Accountancy Department was mounted to run a National Diploma Certificate. The Department had its first ND and HND graduates in 1983 and 1986 respectively. Since 1983, several products of the department are found in various human endeavour performing accounting and related functions. It is worthy to note that the department was the first to be accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in the Polytechnic. The Accountancy Department is one of the best staffed in the Polytechnic. This is the only department in the Polytechnic that has produced two substantive Rectors and a substantive Bursar of the Polytechnic who is a product of the department. About fifteen lecturers of the department have their Ph.D and many are still on the pipeline. The students of Accountancy Department are organized in an academic and social unit known as National Association of Polytechnic Accountancy Students (NAPAS). The association was the first to produce staff-student Almanac in 1985/86. Thereafter from 1986/87 she started the production of student journal "the Polytechnic Accountant". The association has at various times donated books, computers, projects, generating plant etc. to the department.

The department maintains strong partnership with the following professional bodies: Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). The department is currently accredited by ICAN and the institute has donated books and materials to the department. ANAN has also donated materials and books to the department. CITN has assisted in launching of the Tax Club in the Polytechnic in 2017 and promised to donate books. In view of the department's quest for growth, it is seeking for affiliation with University of Port Harcourt for the award of Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Accounting.
